JD Vance

JD Vance

Background

James David Vance was born James Donald Bowman on 2 August 1984 in Middletown, Ohio, and raised largely by his grandmother amid his mother’s addiction – the material of the memoir that made him famous. He served in the United States Marine Corps as a combat correspondent, deploying to Iraq, then studied at Ohio State University and Yale Law School, according to Wikipedia.

Hillbilly Elegy and Venture Capital

After Yale he worked briefly in corporate law before moving into venture capital, joining Peter Thiel’s Mithril Capital and later Revolution’s Rise of the Rest fund. Hillbilly Elegy, published in 2016, became a substantial bestseller, was adapted by Ron Howard for Netflix in 2020, and generated royalty income that remains a meaningful part of his balance sheet.

In 2019 he founded Narya Capital in Cincinnati with backing from Thiel, Marc Andreessen and Eric Schmidt, investing in technology and manufacturing businesses. He stepped back from active management on entering the Senate.

Senate and Vice Presidency

Vance won the Ohio Senate seat in 2022 and was elected Vice President in November 2024, taking office in January 2025 at forty. The trajectory from a first political campaign to the vice presidency in a single term is extremely unusual. The office carries a salary of 235,100 dollars and the official residence at the Naval Observatory.

Assets and Liabilities

Federal disclosures filed during the 2024 campaign showed assets in bands totalling between roughly 4 and 11 million dollars, against liabilities of 750,000 to 1.5 million. His largest single holding was a Charles Schwab brokerage account reported in a band of 2.2 to 7.5 million dollars, alongside book royalties, private stakes connected to Narya and property in Ohio (ProPublica’s index of appointee financial disclosures, Bloomberg’s analysis of cabinet disclosures).

Serving federal officeholders cannot take commercial endorsements, and ethics rules constrain outside income while in office, so his position is now largely static apart from investment performance.

Public Image and Scrutiny

He is among the most recognised political figures in the United States, and the arc of his public positions – from prominent critic of Donald Trump to his running mate – is the most persistent line of criticism against him. His venture funding by Thiel has drawn scrutiny over influence, as has Our Ohio Renewal, the opioid non-profit he founded in 2017, which was criticised for spending relatively little on direct programmes before winding down.

How the Estimate Is Calculated

Documented. His 2024 federal financial disclosure reports assets in bands totalling roughly 4 to 11 million dollars, liabilities of 750,000 to 1.5 million, and a largest single holding – a Charles Schwab brokerage account – of 2.2 to 7.5 million (ProPublica’s index of appointee financial disclosures). His vice-presidential salary is 235,100 dollars.

Estimated. Continuing royalties from Hillbilly Elegy and the Netflix adaptation, and the current value of private stakes associated with Narya Capital, which are not marked to market and are reported only in wide bands.

Liabilities. 750,000 to 1.5 million dollars, modest relative to the asset side.

Not verifiable. Where within each band the true value sits – the reason published estimates for him differ by several million – and the present value of illiquid venture holdings.

Why this range. The lower bound takes the disclosure’s asset bands near their floor and deducts liabilities near their ceiling. The upper bound does the reverse and values the venture stakes generously; Bloomberg’s analysis of cabinet disclosures and similar analyses working from the same filing land around 10 to 12 million on that basis. The range spans the disclosure rather than selecting a point inside it.

Estimated Net Worth

$5 Million – $12 Million
