Peter Thiel

Peter Thiel

Background

Peter Andreas Thiel was born on 11 October 1967 in Frankfurt and moved to the United States as a child, with a period in South Africa and Namibia in between. He was a nationally ranked junior chess player, read philosophy at Stanford, where he founded the conservative Stanford Review, and stayed for a law degree before a brief and unhappy spell at a New York law firm, according to Wikipedia.

PayPal and Facebook

In 1998 he co-founded Confinity with Max Levchin, which merged with Elon Musk’s X.com to become PayPal. He served as chief executive until its sale to eBay in 2002 for 1.5 billion dollars, from which his own stake yielded a reported 55 million – the seed capital for everything that followed. In 2004 he wrote a 500,000 dollar cheque to a Harvard undergraduate’s website, becoming the first outside investor in what became Facebook and acquiring roughly ten per cent. He sold most of the stake after the 2012 flotation, realising over a billion dollars.

Palantir and Founders Fund

Thiel co-founded Palantir Technologies in 2003, built initially around government and intelligence contracts, which went public in 2020 and has since become one of the largest companies in American software. He also founded Founders Fund, which has deployed more than 20 billion dollars across SpaceX, Airbnb, Stripe and Anduril, and Mithril Capital. His book Zero to One became a standard text in start-up circles, and the Thiel Fellowship, which pays young people to skip or leave university, drew enormous attention when launched.

Politics, Gawker and New Zealand

Thiel is the most politically consequential figure in Silicon Valley, and his funding has helped put candidates into national office. He secretly funded Hulk Hogan’s invasion-of-privacy litigation against Gawker Media, which produced a 140 million dollar verdict and the publication’s bankruptcy; he acknowledged the funding afterwards, describing it as deterrence, while critics described it as a billionaire using the courts to close a publication that had written about him. He obtained New Zealand citizenship in 2011 after spending twelve days in the country, prompting a government review. Palantir’s immigration and intelligence contracts have drawn sustained criticism.

How the Estimate Is Calculated

Thiel is the clearest example on this site of why a single net-worth figure misleads. Published estimates in 2026 range from around 12 billion dollars to more than 28 billion, with Forbes’ billionaires profile among the assessments at the upper end – a spread of over 16 billion between credible trackers.

Documented. The PayPal sale at 1.5 billion dollars and his reported 55 million share; the Facebook investment of 500,000 dollars for roughly ten per cent, largely sold after 2012 for over a billion; and his Palantir shareholding, which is disclosed in public filings because he is a corporate insider and must report every transaction (Palantir insider filings with the SEC).

Estimated. Founders Fund carried interest and its private holdings, which are not marked to market and which different trackers value differently or not at all; Mithril; and a long tail of private positions in defence, biotechnology and cryptocurrency.

Not verifiable. Anything held outside disclosed vehicles. ProPublica reported that Thiel had built a Roth individual retirement account – a vehicle intended for middle-class savers with contributions capped at a few thousand dollars a year – into a fund worth around five billion dollars, from which withdrawals are tax-free. That structure sits outside conventional wealth accounting altogether.

Why this range. The dominant variable is the Palantir share price, which has moved dramatically, so the same shareholding supports wildly different totals depending on the date of assessment. The range below spans the credible published assessments rather than selecting one. Anyone quoting a precise figure for Thiel is choosing a tracker, not reporting a fact.
