Kristi Lynn Noem was born on 30 November 1971 in Watertown, South Dakota, and grew up on the family ranch and farm at Castlewood. Her father died in a grain-elevator accident in 1994, when she was twenty-two, and she left university to return home and run the farm, completing her degree two decades later (National Governors Association). Her financial base has always been agriculture and the family’s businesses rather than a professional salary, and the disclosure she filed on entering the cabinet shows a household whose wealth sits in operating companies, most of them her husband’s.

Noem ran the family farming operation and an associated hunting lodge and restaurant business before entering the South Dakota House of Representatives in 2007.
