Background
Matt Damon was born on 8 October 1970 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He won an Academy Award for co-writing Good Will Hunting at 27 and has led the Bourne series since 2002.
The Avatar Story
Damon has said that James Cameron offered him the lead in Avatar with ten per cent of the film’s gross attached, and that he turned it down because he was contracted to complete another Bourne film (The Hollywood Reporter, Variety). Avatar went on to gross more than two billion dollars, which would have made that participation worth in the region of 250 million.
Except It May Not Have Happened
This is where most retellings stop, and they should not. Cameron has disputed the account directly, saying there was never an offer and never a deal, and suggesting Damon extrapolated from the terms he commands generally (The Hollywood Reporter).
Both men are describing the same conversation and remember it differently. The honest position is that the most-quoted number in Damon’s financial story rests on one participant’s recollection, contradicted by the other.
How the Estimate Is Calculated
Documented. Avatar‘s gross, and the fact that Damon did not appear in it. Nothing about the alleged offer is documented, by either party.
Disputed. The offer itself. Damon describes ten per cent of gross (The Hollywood Reporter); Cameron says no offer existed (The Hollywood Reporter). This site does not treat a contested recollection as a fact.
Estimated. Three decades of fees and participations, including the Bourne series; his stake in Artists Equity, the production company he founded with Ben Affleck; and property.
Why this range. It counts what he earned, not what he may or may not have declined. A forgone payment is not a debt and does not reduce net worth – a point worth making because the 250 million figure is often reported as though it left a hole in his finances.
The arithmetic. Three decades of fees and participations, with the Bourne series the largest single contributor; roughly half removed for tax and another fifteen to twenty per cent for representation; property and a stake in Artists Equity added, the latter privately held and not valued here. The disputed Avatar participation contributes nothing to the total in either direction: a payment not received is not a liability. These are broad assumptions rather than accounting: representation costs affect taxable income rather than sitting alongside it, and a headline marginal rate is not an effective rate across a whole career. The working below indicates scale, not precision.
