Arnold Schwarzenegger

Background

Arnold Schwarzenegger was born on 30 July 1947 in Thal, Austria. He won the Mr Olympia title seven times, became one of the biggest film stars of the 1980s and 1990s, and served two terms as Governor of California from 2003 to 2011.

The Fortune That Came First

The most interesting fact about Schwarzenegger’s wealth is its order. He has said he was already a millionaire before he was paid seriously for acting, and the money came from property rather than film (CNBC).

While training and taking business classes in Santa Monica he ran a bricklaying business with his fellow bodybuilder Franco Columbu, marketing the pair as European bricklayers. He put the proceeds, with his bodybuilding earnings, into a deposit on an apartment building in the 1970s, then traded up repeatedly through a rising Santa Monica market (CNBC).

Film, and What It Added

The film career that followed was enormous, and by the 1990s he was among the highest-paid actors in the world. But Forbes has reported that a large share of his present income still comes from the property investments made before the films, and he joined the Forbes billionaire list in 2025 (Forbes).

How the Estimate Is Calculated

Documented. His inclusion on the Forbes billionaires list in 2025 (Forbes), and Forbes’s account of how the fortune was assembled, weighted towards real estate rather than film income (Forbes).

Estimated. The current value of the property portfolio, which is privately held; his film fees and participations, never published; and business interests including fitness and nutrition ventures.

Not verifiable. The composition of the property holdings; and the financial terms of his 2011 divorce settlement, which were not disclosed and which would materially affect any figure.

Why this range. It follows the Forbes assessment. The instructive part is not the total but the sequence: the acting made him famous, the buildings made him rich, and the buildings came first.

Estimated Net Worth

$1 Billion – $1.2 Billion
