Ajit Pawar before the fame

The background and early turning points that shaped Ajit Pawar’s route to prominence.

Ajit Anantrao Pawar was born on 22 July 1959 at Deolali Pravara in Ahmednagar district, Maharashtra, into an agriculturist family from the Baramati belt of Pune district. He was the nephew of Sharad Pawar, one of the dominant figures in Maharashtra and national politics for half a century, and he entered public life the way most western Maharashtrian politicians of his generation did: through the co-operative sugar and banking movement that ran the rural economy of the region. He became a director of the Pune District Central Co-operative Bank in 1995 and held positions across the sugar co-operative network. Land, sugar and credit were the foundations of the wealth counted later in this profile.

Pawar was elected to the Lok Sabha from Baramati in 1991 and vacated the seat within months so that his uncle could take it, moving instead to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from the same town. He held that assembly seat for eight terms and did not lose an election in it from 1991 onwards. Ministerial office followed almost immediately: junior portfolios from 1991, then agriculture and power, then water resources and irrigation through the Congress and Nationalist Congress Party governments of 1999 to 2009. State ministerial salaries in India are modest by design; what made the irrigation years significant to his career was the scale of the capital programme he administered, not the pay attached to it.

Ajit Pawar’s breakthrough years

The career decisions and defining moments that turned recognition into sustained earning power.

He became Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra for the first time in 2010, and he went on to hold the post six separate times under four different chief ministers, more than eight years in total, which the Tribune recorded as the longest tenure anyone has had in the office. With the finance portfolio for much of that period he presented the state budget eleven times.

The money attached to that career is on the record, because Indian candidates file it. The affidavit Pawar submitted to the Election Commission in November 2024, published in full by the Association for Democratic Reforms, set out his income-tax returns: Rs 2,06,55,510 for 2023-24, about $245,000; Rs 80,76,200 for 2022-23; and Rs 75,70,150 for 2021-22. The ministerial salary is a small component of those totals, with farm income, interest, dividends and co-operative returns making up the rest. On our estimate his declared income across the decade to 2024 came to roughly Rs 10 crore, about $1.2 million.

What Ajit Pawar’s work can earn

Reported pay, contracts, royalties and performance income reveal how the fortune was funded.

Eleven state budgets is the headline administrative achievement, and it is a rare one: few Indian finance ministers at state level last long enough to present that many. Alongside it sits the irrigation and water-resources programme of the 2000s, the industrial estate and institutional build-out that turned Baramati from a taluka town into a regional centre, and the party reorganisation of 2023, after which the Election Commission recognised his faction as the Nationalist Congress Party. He returned to the deputy chief ministership in the Mahayuti government formed in December 2024 and held it until January 2026.

Eight consecutive assembly wins from one constituency across thirty-five years is the clearest measure of how he was regarded in Baramati, and the longest deputy chief ministership in Maharashtra’s history is the measure of how he was regarded in Mumbai. He was known in the state secretariat as an administrator who read the files and moved them quickly. He died on 28 January 2026 at the age of 66, as Al Jazeera reported. He is remembered in Maharashtra for the budgets, the canals and the constituency.

Ajit Pawar’s business beyond the main career

Endorsements, ownership interests and investments can keep compounding long after the initial breakthrough.

An Indian state minister does not take brand work. Conduct rules for ministers and the disclosure regime around elected office leave no room for commercial endorsement, and Pawar’s filings contain none of it. His earnings from outside the state payroll were farm and investment income rather than appearance fees: agricultural returns from family land in Pune district, interest on deposits and dividends on the shares listed in his affidavit. In a portfolio of this kind the absence of endorsement income is normal, and it is also the reason his figure is an order of magnitude smaller than that of an Indian public figure from business or entertainment.

The movable schedule of the 2024 affidavit is the clearest picture of his commercial interests: fixed deposits, shares and bonds, silver articles, a tractor and two cars, a Toyota Camry and a Honda CRV, totalling Rs 8,22,00,000 or thereabouts in his own name. Behind that sat the co-operative directorships, beginning with the Pune District Central Co-operative Bank in 1995, and the sugar factories of the Baramati belt in which his family’s interests were held. Those holdings were registered variously to his wife, his sons and the family Hindu Undivided Family, and the figures below count his own column rather than theirs.

Ajit Pawar’s notable luxury item

A reported property or major asset offers a tangible glimpse of the wealth behind the public estimate.

Pawar declared immovable property worth Rs 37,15,00,000 in his own name in November 2024 — agricultural land, plots and buildings concentrated in the Baramati and Pune area — and movable assets of Rs 8,22,00,000, giving the Rs 45.37 crore total that Deccan Herald reported from the filing. His wife Sunetra Pawar, then a Rajya Sabha member, separately declared Rs 14.57 crore of movable and Rs 58.39 crore of immovable assets. Taken with the family Hindu Undivided Family, the combined filing came to about Rs 124.87 crore of assets against Rs 21.40 crore of liabilities. Those are family numbers, not his.

Ajit Pawar’s estimated net worth

$6 Million

Public estimates vary because private contracts, investments, taxes and liabilities are not fully disclosed.

How this estimate is calculated

The anchor is the affidavit filed under oath in November 2024: Rs 8.22 crore of movable and Rs 37.15 crore of immovable assets in his own name, Rs 45.37 crore in total, which at the rupee rate of the time is about $5.4 million.

Two adjustments move it. Election affidavits value land and buildings at acquisition cost or at the state’s circle rate, and both sit below market value in the Pune and Baramati belt, where land prices rose sharply through the 2010s; marking the immovable column towards market value adds up to a third to it. Pulling the other way, his share of the Rs 21.40 crore of liabilities declared in the same filing reduces the net position, as does the fact that a meaningful part of the family’s wealth was registered to his wife and sons rather than to him.

Netting the two, the working supports a range of $5 million to $7 million. The published figure sits midway between the two. It assumes the affidavit’s own schedule is complete, which is the basis on which it was sworn, and it excludes the Rs 124.87 crore family total, which belongs to several people.

Confidence: Documented — anchored in the personal asset and income schedules of the election affidavit he filed under oath in November 2024.

The Pawar family’s institutional footprint in Baramati is substantial — education trusts, an agricultural development trust running one of India’s better-known farm science centres, hospitals and colleges — and Ajit Pawar’s role in it was that of the politician who channelled state attention and public investment towards the town rather than that of a private donor. He held no foundation in his own name and filed no disclosed personal giving. His public image rested on administrative competence and on a blunt, unpolished manner in front of cameras that Maharashtra voters plainly liked.

The financial scrutiny of his career centred on co-operative bank lending. The Economic Offences Wing of the Mumbai police registered a first information report in August 2019 over loans made by the Maharashtra State Co-operative Bank and district banks, and in 2021 the Enforcement Directorate attached the Jarandeshwar sugar mill, valued at more than Rs 65 crore, in connection with it. Pawar denied wrongdoing throughout. The Economic Offences Wing subsequently filed a closure report stating that the criminal case had been brought on a mistake of facts, and no charge against him reached trial. The 2023 division of the Nationalist Congress Party was also contested, before the Election Commission and then the courts, and resolved in his faction’s favour.
