Lopetegui began his career in the youth teams of Real Sociedad before making his professional debut with the senior team in 2002. He played for Real Sociedad for six years before moving to CD Logroñés on loan in 2008. He then went on to play for clubs like SD Beasain, SD Eibar, UD Logroñés, and Real Sociedad B.
