Background
Jahseh Dwayne Ricardo Onfroy was born on 23 January 1998 in Plantation, Florida, and raised largely by his grandmother in Lauderhill after a childhood marked by his mother’s absence and his father’s imprisonment. He was expelled from school, spent time in a juvenile detention centre, and began recording while incarcerated, according to Wikipedia.

He uploaded early tracks from 2013, part of a loose scene of Florida artists working outside the label system entirely. Look at Me!, released in 2015 and recorded for almost nothing, became a phenomenon on streaming platforms before any industry infrastructure was involved. His debut album 17 reached number two on the Billboard 200 in 2017; ? debuted at number one in 2018, with Sad! topping the Hot 100. He was twenty.
The Empire Arrangement
Shortly before his death he signed a distribution arrangement with Empire reported at around ten million dollars, structured to retain a high degree of creative control and ownership rather than assigning rights to a major label. That structure is a decisive factor in his estate’s subsequent earnings: the ownership stayed on his side of the table. The estate is controlled through a trust established by his mother, Cleopatra Bernard, and operates the Bad Vibes Forever imprint.
Allegations, Death and the Trial
At the time of his death, Onfroy was awaiting trial on charges including aggravated battery of a pregnant woman, domestic battery by strangulation and false imprisonment, brought by a former girlfriend. He had pleaded not guilty and the case never reached trial, so the allegations were never tested in court and no verdict exists. His continued streaming success remains a live argument about what audiences should do with the work of accused artists.
He was shot and killed on 18 June 2018 outside a motorcycle dealership in Deerfield Beach, Florida, aged twenty, during an armed robbery in which around 50,000 dollars was taken. In March 2023 three men – Michael Boatwright, Dedrick Williams and Trayvon Newsome – were convicted of first-degree murder and armed robbery and faced mandatory life sentences; a fourth man charged in the case had pleaded guilty and testified for the prosecution (Billboard, NPR).

Not verifiable. The terms of the Empire deal beyond its reported headline value; the estate’s accounts, which are private; and how much of the reported ten million had actually been paid at the time of his death.
Why this range. The figure below is what he left, not what the estate earns. Reported posthumous earnings exceed ten million dollars and the catalogue alone reportedly generates seven figures annually, but that business belongs to his estate and his heirs, including a son born after his death.
