Background
Jessie Buckley was born on 28 December 1989 in Killarney, County Kerry, the eldest of five children of a poet mother who taught singing and a hotelier father. She trained in classical voice and was steeped in Irish traditional music from childhood, a foundation that has shaped much of the work she has taken on, according to Wikipedia.
From a Talent Show to RADA
Buckley came second on the BBC series I’d Do Anything in 2008, competing for the role of Nancy in a West End revival of Oliver!. Losing mattered less than being seen: she went to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, graduated in 2013, and moved into serious stage and television work rather than the light-entertainment career the show might have produced.
Beast, Wild Rose and Chernobyl
Beast in 2017 announced her as a film actor of unusual intensity, and Wild Rose the following year gave her a role that used both the acting and the singing. Chernobyl in 2019 brought her to a global audience. From that point she was cast almost exclusively by directors rather than by studios, working with Charlie Kaufman, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Alex Garland.
The Oscar
Buckley won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 2026 for Hamnet, becoming the first Irish winner of that award, having swept the BAFTA, Golden Globe, Critics’ Choice and Screen Actors Guild awards beforehand (Variety, The Hollywood Reporter). She was previously nominated for Best Supporting Actress for The Lost Daughter, and won an Olivier Award for Cabaret opposite Eddie Redmayne. She has also released albums with the composer Bernard Butler.
How the Estimate Is Calculated
Documented. Nothing. Buckley’s finances are entirely private, no fee has been confirmed by her or by any studio, and no credible reported figure for her wealth exists. Anyone publishing a precise number is extrapolating.
Estimated. The calculation is therefore structural. Reported scale for independent film is instructive: lead roles commonly pay between roughly 10,000 and 200,000 dollars, with a union Schedule F run-of-picture minimum around 65,000 (Backstage, Wrapbook’s guide to actor scale rates). Buckley works above that floor, on prestige mid-budget films where established leads are reported in the low-to-mid six figures and occasionally higher, but well below studio franchise rates. Prestige television and West End theatre pay considerably less than studio film. She has worked steadily but selectively for roughly a decade, largely outside the franchise system that produces eight-figure paydays, and has taken no long-running consumer ambassadorship.
Not verifiable. Any individual fee; her share of album income; property; and whether the 2026 awards sweep has yet been converted into a higher quote, which typically takes a full contracting cycle.
Why this range. The lower bound assumes roughly a decade of independent-film lead fees at the bottom of the reported band with theatre and television in between. The upper bound assumes the top of that band across a fuller slate. A Best Actress Oscar typically raises an actor’s quote substantially, so this range describes her position before that effect works through and should be expected to rise. It is an inference from what actors at her exact career stage earn, not a reported figure.
