Dharmendra

Dharmendra

Background

Dharmendra Kewal Krishan Deol was born on 8 December 1935 in Nasrali, in the Ludhiana district of Punjab, the son of a village schoolteacher. He worked as a drilling-machine operator before entering a Filmfare talent contest that took him to Bombay, and made his debut in 1960 in Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere, for which he was reportedly paid 51 rupees, according to Wikipedia.

Seven Decades and 300 Films

Phool Aur Patthar in 1966 made him a major star and established the physical presence that earned him the epithet He-Man of Bollywood. He appeared in more than 300 films across seven decades. Sholay in 1975, in which he played Veeru opposite Amitabh Bachchan’s Jai, is among the most commercially successful and culturally significant films ever made in India; Chupke Chupke the same year demonstrated a comic timing critics had underrated. He received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award and the Padma Bhushan, and served as Member of Parliament for Bikaner from 2004 to 2009.

Land, Business and Family

His business interests were substantial and built largely on land: farming operations run at scale, restaurants including the Garam Dharam venture trading on his own screen persona, and production through Vijayta Films, which launched his sons’ careers. He was the patriarch of a film dynasty – Sunny and Bobby Deol and Esha Deol all became actors. His marriage to Hema Malini in 1980 while remaining married to his first wife Prakash Kaur attracted persistent comment in the Indian press. He died in Mumbai on 24 November 2025, aged 89, after a long illness (The Tribune), prompting tributes from the President, Vice President and Prime Minister of India (All India Radio).

How the Estimate Is Calculated

Documented. A career of more than six decades and upwards of 300 films, among them Sholay, Phool Aur Patthar and Chupke Chupke (Variety, Al Jazeera); and one term in the Lok Sabha, won for the BJP in Bikaner in 2004 and ended in 2009, after which he did not contest the seat again (The Tribune). Neither his fees nor his estate has ever been disclosed.

Reported but not verifiable. Indian entertainment outlets have reported that he transferred ancestral agricultural land in Punjab to relatives during his lifetime, with a value of around five crore rupees attached to it. Those reports disagree with each other on whether the recipients were his nephews or his cousins, none is traceable to a land record or to any statement by the family, and the figure is a press estimate rather than a valuation. It is noted here rather than counted.

Estimated. Almost everything else, and the dominant asset is land rather than earnings. His 100-acre farmhouse at Lonavala, between Mumbai and Pune, was held for roughly fifty years in a corridor that has appreciated enormously, and accounts for a very large share of any total. Around it sit Mumbai property including in Juhu, the restaurant and production businesses, and a collection of vehicles. Industry assessments at his death ranged from approximately 335 to 450 crore rupees, roughly 40 to 54 million dollars.

Not verifiable. Any of the land valuations, which are estimates rather than transactions; the profitability of the businesses; and how much of the estate had already been distributed during his lifetime.

Why this range. It follows the published crore range converted to dollars, but two cautions apply and are worth stating plainly: Indian net-worth reporting is markedly less standardised than its American equivalent, and portions of the estate were given away before his death. The figure describes assets under his control rather than a single inheritance.

Estimated Net Worth

$40 Million – $54 Million
