Macaulay Culkin

Background

Macaulay Culkin was born on 26 August 1980 in New York City. Home Alone made him the most famous child actor in the world in 1990, and by the time he stepped away from film in the mid-1990s he had been the highest-paid child performer of his generation.

The Home Alone Deals

Culkin has been unusually direct about the money. He has said he prefers Home Alone 2 to the original for the simple reason that he was paid more for it (The Hollywood Reporter), and has described his participation on the sequel as five per cent of the net and fifteen per cent of merchandising.

Those two percentages are worth separating, because one of them is real and the other probably is not. Merchandising participation pays against gross sales. Net profit participation is calculated after studio accounting, and on major releases it very often produces nothing at all – the reason first-dollar gross is the only backend structure that reliably pays, as covered in our piece on the biggest backend deals in film history.

The Trust Fund, Correctly Described

The commonly repeated version is that Culkin emancipated himself from his parents as a teenager. He has said that is not what happened. What he actually did was have his parents’ names removed from his trust fund and an independent executor appointed to oversee it, during a custody dispute in which the trust was itself at stake (Variety).

The distinction matters for a wealth profile: he did not sever the family relationship in law, he removed control of the money from it. Disputes of that kind between child performers and their parents were common enough in the period to become a genre of litigation in their own right (The Hollywood Reporter).

How the Estimate Is Calculated

Documented. Very little in figures. His fee for Richie Rich has been reported at around eight million dollars, and his participation terms on Home Alone 2 come from his own account (The Hollywood Reporter). No studio has published his fees.

Estimated. Accumulated earnings from a run of about six years as the highest-paid child actor working, held in trust through his minority; residual income from the Home Alone films, which continue to air every December; and later income from podcasting, touring with his band and occasional acting.

Probably worth nothing. The five per cent net participation, for the reason above. It should not be counted, and figures that add a percentage of a film’s gross to his wealth are overstating it substantially.

Not verifiable. The value of the trust when he took control of it; and what he has earned since stepping back from film, which he has never discussed in figures.

Why this range. It reflects preserved childhood earnings plus three decades of residuals and intermittent work, rather than the headline fees themselves. The trust survived the dispute intact, which is the main reason he is not a cautionary tale.

Estimated Net Worth

$16 Million – $22 Million
