Prince William

Background

William Arthur Philip Louis was born on 21 June 1982. On the accession of his father in September 2022 he became Duke of Cornwall and Prince of Wales, and with the title came the Duchy of Cornwall – an estate created by Edward III in 1337 to fund the heir to the throne. CNN Business

What the Duchy Actually Pays Him

The Duchy is not a personal bank account and its capital cannot be spent. It is a landed estate of roughly 130,000 acres across more than twenty counties in England and Wales, and what reaches the Duke is its annual distributable surplus.

For the year ended 31 March 2025 that surplus was £22.9 million, down slightly from £23.6 million the year before. Duchy of Cornwall Integrated Impact Report 2025 The figure covers the official, charitable and private costs of the Prince and Princess of Wales and their three children – staff, travel and offices as well as private spending. He pays income tax on what he receives after official expenditure.

What the Duchy Is Not

Two separate pots are routinely confused with his income. The Sovereign Grant funds the monarch’s official duties, not the heir’s: it was set at £132.1 million for 2025-26, calculated as a percentage of Crown Estate profits, and that percentage was cut from 25 to 12 per cent following the 2023 Royal Trustees’ review. The Crown Estate itself is a third thing again. It returned a record net profit of about £1.1 billion in 2024, largely from leasing seabed for offshore wind, and that money goes to the Treasury. None of it is the Duke’s, and none of it is the King’s personal property.

How the Estimate Is Calculated

The arithmetic. Annual income is the one part that is genuinely published: £22.9 million of Duchy surplus for 2024-25 (Duchy of Cornwall), from which official and household costs are met before tax on the remainder. Personal wealth is a different question and a far less answerable one. The Duchy’s capital, valued at over $1 billion, is held for the office rather than the man – he cannot sell it – so counting it as his net worth overstates his position substantially. These are broad assumptions rather than accounting: household expenditure is not itemised in the report, so the taxable residue cannot be derived from public figures.

Estimated Net Worth

Annual income from the Duchy for 2024-25: £22.9 million before official expenses and tax. Personal wealth beyond that has never been published, and any figure asserting otherwise is counting institutional assets he does not own.
