Dhoni was born on July 7, 1981, in Ranchi, then part of Bihar and now the capital of Jharkhand, to Pan Singh, who worked at a local steel-and-engineering public sector unit, and Devaki Devi, a homemaker. He grew up in a modest middle-class household as the youngest of three children, and first excelled at school as a football goalkeeper before a coach, Keshav Ranjan Banerjee, spotted his reflexes and pushed him toward wicketkeeping. Money was tight, and after playing domestic cricket for Bihar without an immediate breakthrough, Dhoni took a job with Indian Railways as a Travelling Ticket Examiner at Kharagpur station, West Bengal, via the sports quota. He married Sakshi Singh Rawat in July 2010; the couple have a daughter, Ziva, born in 2015.

Strong domestic form earned Dhoni a place in the India A squad, and a run of big scores on a 2004 tour of Kenya led to his ODI debut against Bangladesh that December. An explosive 148 against Pakistan in April 2005 announced him as a serious talent, and his aggressive batting, sharp wicketkeeping, and calm decision-making under pressure quickly made him one of Indian cricket’s most bankable young players. He was handed the limited-overs captaincy in 2007, and within months led a young, largely untested squad to victory in the inaugural ICC World Twenty20 — the result that first turned Dhoni into a national icon and set the stage for the endorsement boom that followed.

Dhoni captained India in Test cricket from 2008, guiding the side to the number one Test ranking in 2009-2011, before a historic high point in April 2011 when he led India to an ODI World Cup win on home soil, striking the title-winning six himself. Two years later he completed a rare treble by lifting the 2013 Champions Trophy as captain. He retired from Tests abruptly in December 2014, stepped down as limited-overs captain in January 2017, and retired from international cricket in August 2020. Alongside his international career, Dhoni became the face of Chennai Super Kings after the IPL franchise bought him for $1.5 million in the league’s inaugural 2008 auction, captaining CSK to five IPL titles (2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, 2023) and still turning out for the franchise into his mid-forties.

At his career peak, roughly 2011 to 2019, Dhoni was consistently ranked among India’s top two or three highest-earning athletes by sports-business trackers such as Duff & Phelps’ celebrity brand valuation reports, with combined income from his BCCI contract, IPL salary, and endorsements placing him among the world’s highest-paid cricketers. Since his 2020 retirement, earnings have come almost entirely from his CSK contract, a smaller endorsement slate, and business income — a mix Indian financial media still estimates in the tens of millions of dollars annually.

For much of his international career Dhoni held the BCCI’s top-tier central contract, worth roughly INR 7 crore a year on top of match fees. His most significant recurring income has come from the IPL: bought by CSK for $1.5 million in 2008, his reported salary rose to an estimated INR 12-15 crore per season at its peak, among the league’s highest. He was retained by CSK for a reported INR 12 crore for the 2024 season and has continued at a broadly comparable fee since.

Dhoni’s endorsement portfolio was for years described in Indian media as one of the largest held by any athlete in the country, at times spanning 20-plus brands across FMCG, automobiles, and finance — including Pepsi, Reebok, TVS Motors, Sonata, Gulf Oil, Exide, Orient Electric, Indigo Paints, and Dream11. In 2020 he made a widely reported decision to trim his brand list to focus on longer-term partners. Dream11 ended its ambassador deal with him in 2022 amid tightened scrutiny of fantasy-sports advertising, while ties to brands such as Indigo Paints and Orient Electric have continued. Rather than cash-only fees, Dhoni has periodically negotiated small equity stakes in partner companies — notably an early stake in paint maker Indigo Paints acquired before its 2021 stock listing, whose value business press reported rose sharply once shares began trading.

Dhoni co-founded Rhiti Sports Management with childhood friend and manager Arun Pandey, an agency handling his own commercial affairs and a roster of other Indian athletes. He holds a reported ownership stake in Chennaiyin FC, an Indian Super League football club, alongside actor Abhishek Bachchan and the Mahindra Group’s Vita Dani, and co-owns motorsport outfit Mahi Racing Team India. Through Rhiti Sports he has also taken reported equity and brand-ambassador roles with Indian start-ups, including e-rickshaw maker Tera Motors, part of a pattern of taking ownership stakes over cash-only fees. He also runs his own lifestyle and apparel label, Seven, launched in 2019.

Dhoni’s best-known asset is a large farmhouse and estate on the outskirts of Ranchi, reported to include a private cricket pitch and space for the farming he has spoken about as a personal interest; its value is unconfirmed but frequently estimated by Indian outlets in the tens of crores. He is also reported to hold property in Pune and Chennai. Away from real estate, Dhoni is one of Indian sport’s best-known vehicle collectors, with a garage of motorcycles and cars — including rare, custom-built machines — covered extensively by Indian automotive press, plus a reported collection of luxury watches.
